“What do you suppose they have found in there?” Galen asked Michael in a very low whisper and got an elbow in the ribs for an answer. Galen absolutely could not keep his mouth shut.

Luke Andrew clung to the wall across the corridor a little further along. They had followed the trio about all afternoon and had almost been caught twice. Now as they were coming up on the stroke of midnight, the furtive three had followed the secretive three into the lower regions of the tower. Michael had tried to convince Luke Andrew to come back here several times earlier in the day to have a look in the room in which the Tuathan healer, Vanni and Sophia had taken such a great interest. Luke had kept putting him off until now it was too late. Whatever was beyond the door was still a mystery. Luke had assured him that the chamber was most likely as empty as the rest of the rooms under the tower and simply the room that the unlikely trio of magicians had picked to make their magickal work. They knew no more about it now than when they had first discovered these curious goings on. Vanni had made three trips downstairs, Selwig had come twice and Sophia once. Now they were all in the room together and the flickering light of flame could be seen on the stone corridor. They had built a fire in the room and made a lot of noise for several minutes before falling quiet.

Luke signaled them to move forward and the two apprentices edged along the wall closer to the door. Luke slid down the outside wall until he could see into the room from the shadows. The firelight flickered on his face as he squinted into the room. He could see what appeared to be large blocks or rectangles of sparkling stone sitting on pedestals in the room. Sophia, Vanni and Selwig were sitting on the floor in front of another of the strange blocks. They formed a rough triangle with the two males sitting beside each other and slightly behind Sophia. She was bending over something in front of her. He could see the faint outline of a double white circle around them. She sat up straight and tossed something into the brass bowl in front of her. Pink sparks winked up into the air, popping slightly and a heady aroma filled the air. Various pieces of crystal sparkled on the ground at the edge of the circle in which they sat. Sophia raised both her arms in the air as Michael and Galen took up positions on either side of the door. The two young men peeked carefully around the edge of open doors as the sound of Sophia’s melodic voice drifted to them.

“Oh, God! Who art the author of all good things, strengthen, I beseech thee, thy poor servants, that we may stand fast, without fear, through this dealing and work; enlighten, I beseech thee,
